Perspective(s): Artists Reimagine Welsh History in Groundbreaking Decolonisation Project

A lavish red sofa once owned by a British colonialist who played a key role in establishing British rule in  India, coarse Welsh fabricused to clothe victims of transatlantic slavery, and the traces of the slave trade left behind on slate from north Wales are just some of the objects being re-examined at the heart of Perspective(s), an ambitious Welsh arts programme launching this month.

This groundbreaking initiative, which is supported by the Welsh Government as part of a collective effort to meet the culture and heritage goals of the Anti-racist Wales Action Plan,  features the work of seven ethnically and culturally diverse artists from across Wales.

Perspective(s) aims to decolonise the national collection by reinterpreting these objects and raising critical questions about whose voices are heard in our museums and whose stories are told.

In collaboration with all seven Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales sites, the artists invite audiences to view overlooked or marginalised histories embedded within the chosen objects, and explore how understanding the past can shape a more inclusive future.

As part of Perspective(s), each artist has been paired with a leading Welsh visual arts organisation – each of whom worked closely with the creatives to bring the project to life alongside museum curators.

Visitors are invited to explore installations like Nasia Sarwar-Skuse’s Wales Is…talking about empire at St Fagans National Museum of History. The space, a recreation of a South Asian living room, is centred around a sofa once owned by Robert Clive – known as “Clive of India” – whose command of the East India Company’s army played a major role in British colonisation of India.

Nasia partnered with the artist-led social enterprise Ways of Working as well as curators from St Fagans on this project.

The other artists and their Visual Arts Organisation and museum partners are:

  • Hannan Jones, Artes Mundi and National Roman Legion Museum, using sonic and film work to ignite conversations around alternative histories and unseen narratives.
  • Jasmine Violet, Aberystwyth Arts Centre and National Slate Museum, examining the connections between the Welsh slate industry, the Caribbean, and the transatlantic slave trade.
  • Lal Davies, GS Artists and National Waterfront Museum, exploring Wales’ copper industry and its imperial links through a digital exhibition integrating film, personal archive objects, photography and text.
  • Lucille Junkere at National Wool Museum, exploring Wesh Plains, a low-quality coarse woollen cloth used to clothe enslaved Africans kidnapped to work on plantations in the Americas during the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
  • Sadia Pineda Hameed, Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre and Big Pit National Coal Museum, forming connections between Wales’ history of mining and strike, and global resource extraction and labour movements today.
  • Sophie Mak-Schram, Chapter Arts Centre and National Museum Cardiff, researching the ways that power is structured in the institution, its collections and its histories of display, to collaboratively develop ‘tools’ that challenge or reflect on power and its effects.

These artists, representing a dynamic range of disciplines and backgrounds, are not merely curating art; they are fostering dialogue around the representation of history, power, and identity. Through their lenses, they seek to tell stories that reflect the lived experiences of diverse communities in Wales, both historically and in the present.

Quotes from the artists about why they took part in Perspective(s):

Hannan Jones said: “Perspective(s) resonates with my own diasporic background to allow navigation between histories of migration and empire. Being Welsh and North African but raised in Australia, I am deeply engaged with social and cultural migration, placemaking and storytelling.”

Jasmine Violet said: “It represents a vital step towards supporting marginalised artists and communities in Wales, and opens up essential dialogues around decolonisation, allowing diverse voices and experiences to be represented and celebrated. I hope to help create lasting projects that genuinely support communities, creating a more honest and inclusive environment for everyone in Wales.”

Lal Davies said: “My work focuses on historical objects as a portal to unlocking both personal and societal narratives and my background demonstrates how Welsh identity can be complex and nuanced. Perspective(s) is a platform to add my voice to Wales’ ambition to become an anti-racist nation by 2030, through film and visual arts work.”

Lucille Junkere said: “I applied to Perspective(s) to respond to Welsh Plains. While valuable research exists on the  material, the perspective of those forced to wear the uncomfortable, scratchy woollen cloth is  missing. I wanted to introduce an artistic and curatorial approach that does not minimise the  atrocities of the British Empire. Instead, I wanted to create compelling displays and narratives that  do not present palatable versions of history but reveal multiple stories while amplifying and  celebrating marginalised voices.”

Nasia Sawar-Skuse said: “I got involved with Perspective(s) while researching Robert Clive’s connection to Wales for my PhD, which presented an ideal opportunity to challenge traditional historical narratives by highlighting overlooked stories and connections with empire, particularly those related to the Clive family, and to foster a deeper understanding of Wales’ cultural heritage.”

Sadia Pineda Hameed:  “My (project) explores strategies of resistance from the Welsh mining strikes – which fought for workers’ rights, the protection of land, culture and community – and how these can become symbols of international solidarity for mining strikes today.”

Sophie Mak-Schram:  “Decolonising involves the reorientation of many values and structures that currently oppress most of us. The question is, in the European context, can one decolonise from a colonial centre? I have been working on themes that relate to this question across my artistic and academic work for a long time, and am now excited to be working in the specific context of Cardiff, a city with a lot of complex histories.”

Director of Experience, Learning and Engagement at Amgueddfa Cymru, Nia Williams, said: “Perspective(s) is an innovative way of working that will bring about a much-needed step change in how Amgueddfa Cymru reflects the diversity of our society.

“We actively support a collective effort towards an anti-racist Wales and therefore this collaboration with Arts Council of Wales, the seven creative professionals and arts organisations has been invaluable. We will take forward the relationships developed as part of Perspective(s) and build on our learnings and the new ways of working that have emerged from this initiative”.

Dafydd Rhys, Chief Executive, Arts Council of Wales said: “We are so pleased to have worked with Amgueddfa Cymru, with seven incredible artists, and contemporary arts organisations from across Wales to make this programme possible. Perspective(s) has explored new ways of working that are inclusive and democratic, making sure that the arts and heritage sector reflects the histories of culturally and ethnically diverse communities that have previously been overlooked.

“We hope that the creative outputs from the projects will challenge and engage audiences from all backgrounds, highlighting our shared and complex heritage”.

Perspective(s) is a collaboration between Arts Council of Wales and Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales.  The programme runs from now and throughout 2025.

Amgueddfa Cymru’s dedication to decolonising the collection

There is no single definition that explains exactly what decolonising means, so our Charter lays out what it means for Amgueddfa Cymru. It defines six areas where we will work collaboratively with communities of relevance on the journey towards decolonising the collection.

Amgueddfa Cymru recognises that museums, their collections and cultures are often rooted in colonialism and racism.

In summer 2021, we published our charter on decolonising the national collections. The charter focuses on six key areas of work to undertaking the decolonisation process:

  1. Community action research
  2. Co-curating content
  3. Identifying racist collections
  4. Decision making about acquisitions
  5. Collections access
  6. Digital

15th Anniversary of the GUBA Awards – Celebrating African Excellence

From Seeds to Crystal: Lady Dentaa Amoateng, MBE calls for Africans to unite to grow and unlock the continent’s potential

LONDON, Friday 29th November 2024 – The iconic GUBA Awards proudly marks its 15th anniversary with a call from its founder, Lady Dentaa Amoateng, MBE, for Africans across the globe to unite and unlock the continent’s boundless potential.

The awards will commemorate their key milestone with an exclusive VIP networking event that will be held on Friday, November 29th, 2024, at the Commonwealth Secretariat, Marlborough House, London. The invitation-only event will bring together prominent leaders, innovators, and visionaries, reflecting on GUBA’s legacy and celebrating its role in amplifying African achievements while fostering meaningful connections between Africa and the diaspora.

This anniversary will honour a legacy of promoting African excellence while spotlighting the call for unity and progress on the continent. Guests, including award-winning designer Ozwald Boateng, OBE, parliamentarians Bell Ribeiro-Addy and Dawn Butler, footballer  and broadcaster Eni Aluko, and singer Fuse ODG, will gather to reflect on GUBA’s impact and celebrate its enduring mission.

Key sponsors of the event are PayAngel, KGL Group,  Bills Micro-Credit, Royal Kingdom Estate and Genius Loci International.

Since its inception in 2009, the GUBA Awards have expanded far beyond their initial roots. The inaugural ceremony was held at London’s Porchester Hall, and has since journeyed to Ghana, Rwanda, and the USA, uniting global audiences in recognising African excellence. The next step in this illustrious journey will see GUBA venture to the Caribbean, celebrating the shared history and culture.

The impact of GUBA has been incredible. Not only has it been an inspiration and a beacon of hope for young people to see others from the same heritage doing remarkable things and being celebrated, it has encouraged them to also try to emulate their work.

Reflecting on GUBA’s journey Lady Dentaa said: “We all know Africa has the potential to be one of the greatest places on earth. I urge leaders, the African diaspora, and Africans on the continent to grow, unite, and build Africa. Africa has it all—resources, business opportunities, tourism, food—you name it. It’s time for Africans to reap the benefits of our incredible potential.

“I’m so proud of the role GUBA has played in celebrating and promoting Africa over the past 15 years, which is reflected in our theme from “Seeds to Crystal”. It’s more than just an awards ceremony, it’s a movement. We created a platform that unites communities, builds bridges and opens doors for collaboration across industries and borders. The ability to inspire and empower others while celebrating our heritage is what makes me most proud.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported us, and let’s continue working together to see Africa shine.”

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “African communities and Londoners of African heritage have contributed – and continue to contribute – a huge amount to the success of our capital. The achievements of the winners and nominees of the 15th anniversary of the GUBA awards are shining examples of the talent of our capital’s African diaspora and act as an inspiration to us all. I am also committed to strengthening our relationship with Africa, and that includes leading a delegation of London-based businesses to key markets there during my third term, as we continue to build a better London for everyone.”

His Excellency Papa Owusu-Ankomah, High Commissioner of Ghana to the United Kingdom said: “The GUBA Awards have been an incredible platform for celebrating African excellence and fostering stronger ties between the continent and the diaspora.

“As we mark the 15th anniversary of this remarkable event, it is a testament to the power of vision, unity, and the drive to amplify African achievements globally. These awards have inspired countless individuals and strengthened the bridge between Africa and the world. I commend Lady Dentaa for her unwavering dedication and leadership in championing this cause, and I look forward to witnessing the continued growth and impact of GUBA in the years to come.”

Its visionary leadership has built bridges that connect cultures and strengthen unity among Africans globally. By recognising achievement, empowering businesses, and creating opportunities, GUBA profoundly impacts African communities, especially the youth.

“As you celebrate this milestone, know your work inspires and uplifts many, particularly within the diaspora. We celebrate with Lady Dentaa and her team and are confident GUBA will keep championing Africa.”

UK Celebrates Asantehene’s Silver Jubilee with Prestigious Royal Gala Dinner and Akwasidae Festival

London, August 2nd 2024

The UK will this weekend play host to the Silver Jubilee celebrations of His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, King of the Asante.

The landmark festivities will feature two significant events, a glittering Royal Gala Dinner held at the Peninsula Hotel in Knightsbridge, London and the centuries-old Akwasidae Festival.

Dignitaries and VIPs from across the political, cultural, and media spheres will gather to honour Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who ascended to the Golden Stool of the Ashanti Kingdom in 1999. The celebrations will culminate on Sunday at the Akwasidae Festival, a cultural event of immense historical, social, and religious significance.

Manhyia Palace said: “The UK is home to many Ghanaians in the diaspora, so it was only right that we come here to celebrate the Asantehene’s Silver Jubilee with them.”

During his visit to the UK, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II spent time with King Charles III, his personal friend. The Asantehene was a guest at King Charles’s Sandringham House, in Norfolk, and also attended the King’s coronation last year.

The Akwasidae Festival will take place in the City of London. The name is derived from two Ashanti-Twi words: “Akwasi” or “Kwasi” (a name given to a male child born on a Sunday) and “Adae” (meaning a calendar or sleeping/resting place). Akwasidae therefore signifies a special Sunday set aside by the Asante people for special prayer or mass.

The prestigious dinner  is being organised by the Asante Investment Trust (AIT) through GUBA Enterprise and Africa Help UK.

The AIT is mandated by the Asantehene to strategically focus more on organising and marshalling the assets of the Kingdom for the collective benefit of the Kingdom, its people, the people of Ghana through the creation of various business entities aimed at conducting diverse forms of business to create employment, opportunities and wealth.

GUBA Enterprise is a leading social enterprise dedicated to advancing the interests of Africans in the diaspora and on the continent through various socio-economic programs and initiatives.

Lady Dentaa Amoateng, MBE, President and CEO of GUBA Enterprise, said: “We are deeply honoured and proud to have organised the Royal Gala Dinner in celebration of His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s Silver Jubilee. This event is a testament to the strong ties between the Ghanaian diaspora and our heritage. It is a privilege to celebrate such a monumental occasion and to honour a leader who has made significant contributions to our culture and community.”

ESPR are finalists in the PRWeek Corporate Affairs Awards

Agency shortlisted for NHS Black Heritage Blood Donation campaign

ESPR was shortlisted alongside many of the UK’s leading PR agencies in the PRWeek Corporate Affairs Awards’ Best Public Health Awareness Campaign category for its NHS Black Heritage Blood Donation campaign.

The agency was announced as a finalist for this prestigious industry award as a recognition of the work undertaken during the campaign, media coverage gained, and results achieved.

The campaign in collaboration with NHS Blood and Transplant, aimed to encourage more Black heritage blood donors to come forward, raise awareness of sickle cell and ethnically matched blood, and encourage repeat donations from younger target audiences of Black heritage.

The strategy involved using influential Black role models from The Powerlist  to resonate with the target community and inspire them to get involved for a good cause. Dame Sharon White and Lord Simon Woolley came forward to donate blood at the newly opened Stratford Donation Centre in Stratford, London. The Powerlist is the annual list of the most influential Black people in Britain.

Other Powerlistees, as they are known as, supported the campaign by posting our content on their company’s intranet and social media channels and resharing the content on their platforms.

Independent Oversight Group launches recommendations to Church Commissioners to address legacy of African chattel enslavement

Church of England’s investment arm accepts the report in full

London, March 4, 2024: Following its appointment last year by the Church Commissioners for England, an independent Oversight Group is today releasing its report and recommendations into how the body should implement a new impact investment fund. The Fund and grant-funding programme are being set up as part of the Church Commissioners’ journey to heal and repair the damage caused by the legacy of African chattel enslavement.

The recommendations include:

  • Recognition that £100m initially earmarked by the Church Commissioners is not enough, relative to the scale of the Church Commissioners’ endowment or of the moral sin and crime of African chattel enslavement, and that the organisation, in partnership with others, should target an initiative of £1bn and above
  • That the timeline for the delivery of the fund should be accelerated and delivered faster than the nine years originally envisaged
  • A call for the Church of England to fully acknowledge and apologise for the harms caused by its historic denial that Black Africans are created in the image of God, for its deliberate actions to destroy diverse African religious belief systems and to facilitate work that builds the spiritual connection of Africa and the African diaspora with the Gospel and the diverse spiritual practices of African forebears

The Oversight Group is recommending that the new impact investment fund be called the Fund for Healing, Repair and Justice. Following consultation with members of the global African diaspora, the recommendations call on the Church Commissioners to use this Fund to invest in Black-led businesses focusing on education, economic empowerment, health outcomes and improving access to land and food as well as provide grants to address these and other issues brought up for communities impacted by the legacies of African chattel enslavement.

The report says: “Crimes against humanity rooted in African chattel enslavement have caused damage so vast it will require patient effort spanning generations to address. But we can start today, in small and large ways.”

The report and recommendations were drafted by a Black-led Oversight Group, which had a majority of members from the impacted communities, using consultation and research conducted with the global African diaspora, to ensure the voices of those affected by African chattel enslavement were central to the process and the final recommendations.

The Right Reverend Dr Rosemarie Mallett, Bishop of Croydon, Chair of the Oversight Group said: “No amount of money can fully atone for or fully redress the centuries long impact of African chattel enslavement, the effects of which are still felt around the world today. But implementing the recommendations will show the commitment of the Church Commissioners to supporting the process of healing, repair and justice for all of those across society impacted by the legacy of African chattel enslavement.”

The Oversight Group has also recommended that the programme should be ultimately owned and run by Black communities. The aspiration is for the impact investment and spending programme to start operating later in 2024.

Bishop Rosemarie continued: “This work and the Fund matter because the legacy of African enslavement continues to have a significant impact on communities today and inequalities persist till this day. The impact is measurable and apparent in everything from pregnancy and childbirth outcomes to life chances at birth, physical and mental health, education, employment, income, property, and the criminal justice system. We hope this initiative is just the start and is a catalyst to encourage other institutions to investigate their past and make a better future for impacted communities.”

Another recommendation calls on the Church Commissioners and Church of England to conduct further research into how else they were enriched by their involvement in African chattel enslavement.

The Church Commissioners, which manages the Church of England’s investment arm, has welcomed and accepted the report in full while acknowledging that no amount of money can make up for the past, it had to be done. The Fund is an essential act for the Church of England, on theological and humanitarian grounds. The setting up of the Fund is the most significant act of acknowledgement and repair yet made by any UK institution that was in receipt of funds earned through the enslavement of African people and their descendants.

“In seeking justice for all, we must continue to work together remembering that all are created in the image of God,” said The Most Reverend Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury. “The Oversight Group’s independent work with the Church Commissioners is the beginning of a multi-generational response to the appalling evil of Transatlantic chattel enslavement. My prayer is that this work will stimulate further visionary and practical co-created action.”

The full report and recommendations can be viewed at https://hrjfund.org.
